To toss my Brasilian two centavos in — I attended a US curriculum high school in São Paulo in the mid 70s. One day several students disappeared. Turned out they had been expelled from the country on 24h notice, because they had been seen smoking marijuana behind the tennis courts between classes. There were fake janitors at the school that the military government had placed there as monitors. There was a whole government unit called DOPS (Dept of Political and Social Order) that monitored stuff to keep people in line. We students used to joke about “Dialing for DOPS.”
