Coy-Koi
![]() |
Coi-Koi | Longform Editions | 2025 | From Beylis who resides in rural Ireland: My sometimes neighbour Kevin inherited a Koi from his mother when she passed away. The Koi was maybe ten years old when she came into Kevin’s care. They lived together for about a decade with life passing by in its usual way. Kevin would sprinkle daily flakes into the tank and have an occasional one-sided conversation and the Koi would swim in circles upon circles upon circles. One day, Kevin came home from a weekend away and the Koi was floating upside down at the bottom of the tank. Though still alive, this was clearly not a desirable state for this shimmery orange creature. At the top of the hill between Kevin’s sometimes house and my house, there is a seemingly minute pool of water beside a large sprawling hawthorn tree whose limbs drape over the surface. We're not sure what the source of the water is but it is always clear and has never had any algae creeping across it. The name of our townland is ‘Ridge of the Wells’ so it might be that the water comes from an underground spring. When Kevin saw the Koi at the bottom of the tank, he realised that a life of swimming in circles inside the same four walls was no longer a life worthwhile. So Kevin brought the Koi to the pool at the top of the hill and released it into a new existence. Now I'm the one who sprinkles the daily flakes and has the one-sided conversations. I arrive, shaking the food and calling out ‘Coy Koi’ and sometimes the Koi swims over to say hello and other times it dives beneath the water and shimmies away from me deep down into the mysterious unknown waters. I often daydream about what it must be like for the Koi to live in the pool after a lifetime in the tank. I wonder how deep the water goes down and whether there's tributaries that the Koi goes off and explores. Do the hares and the foxes that live around us come to visit? Sometimes I wonder does the Koi get lonely? Does it think back to its time in the tank? If given a choice, would the Koi have picked the uncertainty of the pool over the steadiness of the tank? Sometimes I wonder if it will survive a full year of changing seasons. But overall, thinking about the Koi fills me with hope and a deep sense of magic and the possibilities in life. I wrote this piece imagining Koi’s initial explorations of the pool. | * | 0:11:24 (MP3 | Pop-up)

An Octave Before Thunder

I Keep My Diamond Necklace In A Pond Of Sparkling Water | Gryphon Rue | 2025 | Gryphon Rue is the great grandson of sculptor Alexander Calder / from Rue about this album: I live in a former bungalow colony in the Catskills. Out my window is a pond where Ukrainian-American immigrants once bathed. Next door is a former casino, where there was a trick cigarette machine which entered into a brothel. The view culls up pastoral imaginations – Beethoven’s Sixth, Bruegel’s The Hunters in the Snow, the word glade. I hope the surroundings have tuned me to larger structures. Last summer, I heard choruses of Green frogs and strange, broken sounds of a Bullfrog. I learned to play the Innato multi-chamber ceramic flute. It’s as if someone said: carry the clay flute to the edge of the pond. The woods have a spirit, if you can imagine it. The sound of breath across the flute seems to echo this. Later, think of the wind in the tops of trees. And softly in the reeds drone the dark flutes of autumn (Georg Trakl). This record was recorded in High Falls, NY, harvested from the surrounding wildlife. There are birds and insects recorded on Cortes Island in British Columbia. This is a woodsy record. Odetta Hartman and I recorded her violin in the cabin on Cortes, where I was staying. There are also insects in Santa Rosa, CA, and humpback whales, provided by my father from a trip he took to Rurutu, Polynesia. People swim with the whales, longing to communicate with them. | * | 0:33:57 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Duff

backwardsupwardsky | Edgetone | 2025 | From Jonas about this album: This music was written over the course of 3 years of winter solo camping during the pandemic. The location was the 2 million acre Barry Goldwater Missile Range in the far southwest corner of Arizona along the USA-Mexico border. Accessible by permit only, the scorched white playas or the Missile Range are bombed regularly, but the “sky islands” of its many mountain ranges are wilderness preserves that contain unique species of animals and plants that were stranded here after the ice age. Sleeping outside under the stars, cooking on a campfire, and working on this music under a tarp, Jonas lived at the base of the white granite Tinajas Altas mountains for 15-22 days at a time every January. Over the three years he only saw a couple of people - two rangers and a few ATVers flying Trump flags. The landscape is filled with saguaro cactus, ironwood trees, elephant trees and forests of ocotillo. A few miles to the South, Trump’s incomplete wall cuts directly into the white granite of the mountains. In this solitude this music was written. Some days consisted of starkly bright sun, others were dominated by the dullness of overcast days and never ending wind. For most days, Jonas watched the shadows grow across Davis Plain each afternoon as the sun slowly crossed over the ridge of granite. / "Duff" features Chris Jonas on soprano and tenor saxophones, Jeremy Bleich on electric bass and electronics, & Milton Villarrubia III on drums & was recorded July 12 & 13, 2022 by Ed Peterson at Roving Bovine Studio, Santa Fe, NM | * | 0:50:37 (MP3 | Pop-up)
